Designers love hexagons: no matter what social network profile you look at, there are ceramic tiles in the form of honeycombs, furniture-hexagons, and even shelves on the walls in a ‘fashionable’ shape.

Of course, you can buy yourself one of those in some online store, but why spend so much? A wooden plank, a couple of screws, and a bit of the wood glue… And you get yourself fashionable shelves appearing on the wall.

To make a shelf yourself, you will need:

  • planks: 1 inch thick (1-2 cm), 4 inches wide (10 cm) (it is better to calculate the length individually)
  • a pack of screws
  • corner brackets – for fixing shelves
  • screws with dowels – for fixing shelves on the wall

As well as some instruments:

  • drill
  • sander or sandpaper
  • construction tape
  • ruler

For painting the shelf we recommend using:

  • white or colored paint (or any other wood paints for interior use)

DIY honeycomb shelf — Step 1

To estimate how many shelves and what configuration you want, take a sheet of paper and sketch out the desired design. Let it be individual hexagons scattered on the wall, or collected in groups – you decide.

Any size can be made. For example, take the edge length as a basis – 10 inches (25 cm). Now count how many edges you have drawn, and multiply the number by your edge length – this is the total footage of the board you need to buy. (And if there are segments left, make a shelf as a gift to your friend).

Let the “advanced” woodcutters start with sawing wood with a circular saw.

And we would start by going to the store, where we buy planks and immediately ask them to be cut to the sizes we need.

The main thing to remember in the workshop is that you need 30 ° cuts! Do not forget.

Now put all the pieces together to check that everything fits. Ok? Next, we return home to assemble shelves.

At home:

  1. Assemble the parts again. It is more convenient to do this on a flat floor.
  2. Drill holes, and only then we drive in the screws – otherwise, the planks may crack.
  3. Assemble all the elements according to the design.

Sand all surfaces well and proceed to painting. In the photos below, all the shelves are painted with azure, and the ends are painted with white enamel for wood. But you can use whatever combination you like.

How to paint a shelf: 3 tips

  1. Regardless of whether you paint your shelves with glaze, enamel or other decorative coating, choose reliable paints that are safe for health. These must be materials for internal work, who would want to breathe harmful substances?
  2. If the standard glaze color does not suit you, you can mix several colors of the same brand yourself.
  3. Apply the first layer of paint with a brush or roller, and after 3-4 hours the second one. It is also recommended to apply the enamel in 2 layers. Bookshelves, like other furniture, can be varnished if desired

DIY wall shelf — Step 4 (almost done)

It remains only to attach the corners, which will hold the shelves on the wall. Prepare holes in the wall, drive in the dowels, and then fix the shelves with screws.
